The pencils were sharpened. The lesson plans made. 1,432,554 pages were printed out or copied and placed into various binders.
I was excited. The kids, not so much. This year I decided to try to make our first day extra special, just to ward off some of those back- to- school- blues. There are so many wonderful suggestions out there on various blogs. I was inspired to adapt some of my favorite ideas for our first day.
For breakfast we had cinnamon roll cake. Now, there is nothing we like better than cinnamon rolls for the most special breakfast occasions EXCEPT cinnamon roll cake. Why? The whole thing is like the center of the cinnamon roll, without any of the outsides.
I gave the kids some little presents which they absolutely loved. This was a big deal because I rarely spend extra money on anything that is not a strict necessity. But they each had a gift wrapped pencil case, small notepad, and those silly little erasers that can come apart and be put back together, in shapes like cupcakes and animals. I also wrote each kid a short note telling them how great they are and what a privilege it is to be their teacher. Simple things, but it was pretty cute to hear their exclamations of surprise and thanks.
This cookie cake was the last surprise. Obviously I need more practice using a writing tip for frosting, but the kids weren’t too picky.
Before you feel overwhelmed…
This was the first (and perhaps only) year that I have gone to any great lengths to celebrate our first day. Please don’t assume that I do things like this all the time! If you want to make your first day special, maybe just pick one or two ideas that appeal to you and that YOUR kids would appreciate and do those.
I’d love to hear your ideas or traditions for the first day of school!
